It217;s easy to be busy with the Christian life—programs, good intentions, real effort—and still be missing the one thing that keeps it all from exploding. In Ephesians 1:15–16, Paul looks at believers whose faith in Jesus is visibly pouring out as love toward one another, and what he does in response is the piece we most often skip.
Most of us carry a ready answer to 220;I217;ll be happy if…221;—the promotion, the healed relationship, the life that finally settles into place. That hunger is exactly what Jesus addresses when he sits down on a hillside in Matthew 5 and declares blessed the poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, and the persecuted—people whose lives look nothing like what we217;d put in that blank.
Even after turning our lives over to Christ, we can still pray as though God were there to serve our wants and protect our plans. In Matthew 7, Jesus says, “Ask, seek, and knock,” raising a searching question for daily prayer: When we belong to Him, what should we be asking our Father to give?
Bold faith can feel clearest in a crisis; the harder question is how to live when the rush is over and ordinary life must begin again. Matthew 2:19–23 meets Joseph at precisely that point: Herod is dead, God calls his family home from Egypt, and the road ahead still demands careful listening. What does faithfulness look like when obedience is clear, but the next step is not?
We want God’s wisdom, yet often what we really want is an advantage—something that makes us look right, strong, and worthy of respect. In James 3:13–17, wisdom from above takes a startlingly different shape: meek conduct, mercy, gentleness, and a willingness to be taught. What does that wisdom ask of us as we wait for Jesus to return?
Grace saves us—we don217;t deserve it, can217;t earn it, and have no grounds to boast about it, as Paul makes plain in Ephesians 2:8–9—so what does it look like when a community of undeserving people actually lives that out together as the church God is building?
The decorations come down, the calendar turns, and Christmas recedes into memory—but Matthew 2 insists there217;s something that doesn217;t go out of season. And if the Gospel doesn217;t go out of season, are we keeping ourselves focused on where it is pointing us?
Most of us navigate life by a quiet, practical question: what217;s the minimum I need to get by with my time and my money? In Matthew 2, the wise men travel months across dangerous roads and then open their best treasures before the child—and the gap between what they did and what they could have gotten away with is exactly where this passage challenges us.
